Ouarzazate to Merzouga Sahara desert Trip

Day 1: Ouarzazate – Skoura – Rose Valley – Dades Gorge

Depart from Ouarzazate in the morning and travel through the scenic landscapes of southern Morocco. Your first stop is the lush Skoura Oasis, a vast palm grove dotted with ancient earthen kasbahs, including the famous Kasbah Amridil, one of the best-preserved fortresses in the region. Continue toward Kalaat Mgouna and the legendary Rose Valley, a region renowned for its fragrant damask roses, traditional distilleries, and colorful seasonal festivals. Along the way, enjoy short stops to admire local cooperatives producing rose water, perfumes, and natural cosmetics.

Drive through the breathtaking Dades Valley, surrounded by dramatic rock formations, fertile terraces, and traditional Berber villages clinging to the mountainsides. Stop at panoramic viewpoints to capture stunning photos of the winding road known as the “Monkey Fingers” rock formation and the famous serpentine curves of the Dades Gorge. In the late afternoon, arrive at your charming hotel or riad in the Dades Gorge, where you will enjoy a delicious traditional Moroccan dinner and relax in a peaceful mountain atmosphere. Overnight in the hotel or riad.

Day 2: Dades Gorge – Todra Gorge – Erfoud – Merzouga Desert

After enjoying breakfast at your hotel, depart the Dades Valley and travel toward the spectacular Todra Gorge, one of Morocco’s most impressive natural wonders. Walk through the narrow limestone canyon, where sheer cliffs rise over 300 meters high, creating a dramatic and refreshing atmosphere. You will have free time to explore, take photos, and experience the contrast between the cool river and towering rock walls.

Continue your journey through desert landscapes and palm-filled oases toward Erfoud, a town famous for its rich fossil deposits and lively date markets. You may visit a local fossil workshop to see how ancient marine fossils are transformed into beautiful decorative pieces.

In the afternoon, arrive in Merzouga, gateway to the majestic dunes of Erg Chebbi. Exchange your vehicle for a camel caravan and begin a magical trek across the golden sand dunes as the sun slowly sets, painting the desert in warm shades of gold and orange. After approximately one hour, reach your luxury or standard desert camp.

At the camp, enjoy traditional Moroccan mint tea, followed by a delicious dinner under the stars. In the evening, gather around the campfire to experience authentic Berber music and drumming, creating an unforgettable Sahara atmosphere. Spend the night in a comfortable nomad-style tent, equipped with beds and blankets, surrounded by complete silence and a sky full of stars.

Day 3: Merzouga – Rissani – Nkob – Agdz – return to Ouarzazate

Wake up early in the peaceful desert to witness the unforgettable sunrise over the Erg Chebbi dunes, as the first golden light slowly transforms the sand into a sea of warm colors. Enjoy a traditional Moroccan breakfast at the camp, surrounded by the silence and beauty of the Sahara.

After breakfast, return to the village of Merzouga by camel ride or comfortable 4×4 vehicle, where your driver will be waiting. Begin your journey back toward Ouarzazate through a changing landscape of desert plains, rocky plateaus, and ancient caravan routes. Stop in the historic town of Rissani, once an important trading center, where you can explore the local souk and traditional ksars.

Continue driving through Nkob, known for its impressive kasbahs and palm groves, and follow the legendary Draa Valley from Agdz, one of the longest and most beautiful palm valleys in Morocco. Enjoy scenic stops along the way to admire the contrast between lush green oases and arid desert mountains, as well as traditional Berber villages.

Cross the rugged Anti-Atlas Mountains, offering spectacular panoramic views before arriving back in Ouarzazate in the late afternoon, where your memorable Sahara adventure comes to an end.
